Water quality in
Riverview.

Riverview is on the Urban Utilities drinking water network, supplied from Seqwater’s Mt Crosby treatment plants on the Brisbane River. Stormwater from Riverview runs to the Brisbane River and the Bremer River, in the Lower Brisbane River catchment, which the 2025 Report Card rated poor. The government figures below show what that means at your tap, in your hot water system and in the creek.

WHAT’S IN THE WATER · RIVERVIEW

Where Riverview’s
tap water comes from.

Riverview is on the Urban Utilities drinking water network, supplied from Seqwater’s Mt Crosby treatment plants on the Brisbane River. Every connected home in the city gets it the same way: water released from Wivenhoe Dam travels down the Mid Brisbane River to Mt Crosby, Seqwater’s East Bank and West Bank plants treat it, and Urban Utilities pumps it through its Ipswich reservoirs to your meter. Seqwater reports on the City of Ipswich zone every month. The headline figures are in the table below.

Seqwater adds two things on purpose. The first is chloramine, a disinfectant that holds a residual longer than plain chlorine over the long mains out to Riverview. It is also why a standard carbon jug does less than people expect. The second is fluoride, dosed to a target of 0.8 mg/L under Queensland law. Fish keepers need to neutralise the chloramine. Anyone on home dialysis should talk to their unit about filtration.

Mineral spike after heavy rain, 20 November 2024. Treated water from the Mt Crosby plants recorded total dissolved solids of 700 and 730 mg/L (guideline 600), chloride of 270 and 300 mg/L (guideline 250) and hardness of 250 mg/L (guideline 200) after a significant rainfall event pushed natural mineral concentrations up in the Mid Brisbane River. Five aesthetic guideline exceedances, no health exceedance. Seqwater Drinking Water Service Annual Report 2024–25

How hard is the water in Riverview?

Network water here is moderately hard: 80–115 mg/L as CaCO₃, against an aesthetic guideline of 200 mg/L. It spiked to 250 mg/L in November 2024 after heavy rain washed minerals into the Mid Brisbane River. You see it as scale on kettles and shower screens. It costs most on hot water elements and heat exchangers. Scale protection on the feed is worth fitting to a hot water system in Riverview. A whole-house softener is usually more than this water needs. Hot water systems in Riverview ↗

The pH is going up

Seqwater is lifting the pH of water leaving Mt Crosby from about 7.8 to a target of 8.4 from mid-August 2026, to extend disinfection in warm months, raise alkalinity and reduce corrosion in the network. The change covers Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan, Moreton Bay and parts of the Scenic Rim. In Riverview homes, copper pipes and brass fittings corrode less in slightly more alkaline water. Hot water systems will scale a little more. Fish keepers should re-check their tank water after the change.

What the pipes in Riverview add

Riverview was largely plumbed in copper between the 1960s and 1990s. Copper does not rust, but it dissolves slowly into water that sits in the pipe. Blue-green stains around a basin drain are the sign. Pipes cast into a slab can leak for months before anyone notices. Across the suburb, the original fittings, tempering valves and braided hoses are wearing out together. In an established home they put more sediment and taste into the water than the mains do.

The 2021 Census counted 1,055 private dwellings in Riverview, 96% of them separate houses. About 50% of households rent. For a renter, a water problem goes to the property manager first, and the plumber deals with them directly.

The Brisbane River: where Riverview’s water goes

The tidal Brisbane River below Mt Crosby Weir, plus the creeks that feed it from eastern Ipswich: Woogaroo, Six Mile, Goodna and Opossum. Greater Springfield, Goodna, Redbank Plains and the riverside acreage suburbs drain here. Riverview’s stormwater reaches the Brisbane River and the Bremer River.

Healthy Land & Water rated the Lower Brisbane River catchment “Poor” for environmental condition in the 2025 Report Card, with social and economic benefits rated very high. The 2025 Report Card notes nitrogen concentrations rising in the Brisbane estuary and a general decline in catchment condition across the region since 2021. 2025 Report Card ↗

The 2011 and 2022 floods reached low-lying parts of Riverview, and Council’s historical flood mapping shows how far. Floodwater is untreated river and creek water carrying sewage, fuel and silt. What it leaves in drains, gullies and rainwater tanks stays long after the water drops. A tank that went under needs emptying and cleaning. A hot water system that went under needs checking before anyone uses it. Council flood mapping ↗

Where the wastewater goes

Riverview is sewered. Wastewater goes to one of Urban Utilities’ four Ipswich treatment plants, at Bundamba, Goodna, Carole Park and Rosewood, and the treated water is released to the rivers under Queensland environmental authorities. You own the sewer drain under the house and out to the connection point. Blockages, root intrusion and overflows happen there. Sewer drain repairs in Riverview ↗

RIVERVIEW WATER QUESTIONS

What people ask
about the water.

Is the tap water in Riverview safe to drink?

Yes. Network water in Riverview is treated at Mt Crosby, chloraminated and fluoridated, and sampled every month by Seqwater and Urban Utilities against the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines. A chlorine taste, scale and the odd brown tap after mains work are aesthetic problems. None of them is a health risk.

Is Riverview water hard or soft?

Moderately hard. Urban Utilities describes South East Queensland water as hard to moderately hard, and zones supplied from Mt Crosby have reported around 80 to 115 mg/L as calcium carbonate, against a guideline of 200 mg/L. It briefly reached 250 mg/L in November 2024 after heavy rain in the Mid Brisbane River. In Riverview you will see it as scale on hot water elements and shower screens. You will not taste it.

Does Riverview tap water contain fluoride?

Yes. Seqwater adds fluoride at Mt Crosby to a target of 0.8 mg/L, within a range of 0.6 to 1.0 mg/L, as the Fluoridation of Public Water Supplies Act 2008 (Qld) requires. The health guideline is 1.5 mg/L. Every council on the South East Queensland Water Grid, Ipswich included, gets fluoridated water.

Why does my water in Riverview look brown, cloudy or milky?

Milky water that clears from the bottom of the glass up is air. It is harmless. Brown or yellow water after Urban Utilities has worked on the mains, or after a burst nearby, is sediment stirred up in the pipes. Run an outside tap until it clears and keep the washing machine off until then. If it does not clear, report it to Urban Utilities on 13 23 64.

Is the Brisbane River safe to swim or fish in?

The Lower Brisbane River catchment was rated poor for environmental condition in the 2025 Healthy Land & Water Report Card. For any natural waterway in South East Queensland, stay out for at least three days after heavy rain, when stormwater carries the most bacteria and sediment. Treat any fish you catch as coming from an urban river.

Do I need a water filter in Riverview?

Not for safety. A chloramine-rated carbon filter, if taste bothers you. Scale protection on the hot water system is the other change most households would notice. The plumbers we work with fit filters, and will tell you when you do not need one.

My Riverview home has flooded before. Does that affect the water now?

The water Urban Utilities delivers is treated either way. Floods leave silt in your own drains, gullies and sometimes the service line. A rainwater tank that went under floodwater stays contaminated until it is emptied and cleaned. If drainage has been slow since a flood, or a tank went under, mention it when you enquire. It tells the plumber where to start.
