Stormwater drainage in
North Ipswich.

Stormwater only becomes interesting when it stops working. Water pooling against the house, a pit that overflows in every storm, a downpipe that backs up: these look like the same problem and have very different causes. Working out which one you have is what stops you spending money on the wrong fix. North Ipswich is about 11 km from our Redbank Plains base, and it has its own local story — the notes below are specific to it.

How we find the cause.

We follow the water. That means the collection points, the pipe route and the discharge point, because a blockage, a broken connection, a poor fall and simply not enough capacity all produce the same puddle. Knowing where your stormwater is meant to discharge is the first thing to establish, and on many Ipswich blocks it is not obvious.

Clearing a stormwater pipe and redesigning a property’s drainage are different scopes with different price tags. If the issue is levels, discharge points or capacity, the honest answer is that clearing the line will not solve it, and we would rather say that before you pay us than after.

What this means in North Ipswich

Stormwater on older North Ipswich properties was usually extended piecemeal over the decades: downpipes discharging to the surface, pipes of unknown route, connections nobody has a plan for. Pooling water or overflowing gutters can trace to a blocked or collapsed line, a connection that was never made, or simply a system built for a smaller roof than the house has now.

Parts of North Ipswich sit on creek and river floodplains and were affected in 2011 and 2022. Stormwater here can back up simply because the receiving creek is high, which is not a fault in your system at all. Timing tells us which you have: note whether pooling happens in ordinary rain, or only when the local waterways are up.

Older drains throughout, plus riverside land where flooding leaves silt and debris in stormwater and sewer lines. Around 31% of households in North Ipswich rent. If that is you, report the fault to your property manager first — they authorise the work, and we deal with them directly from there.

Ipswich City Council publishes historical flood mapping showing the estimated extent of the 1974, 2011 and 2022 floods. If your property is in a low-lying part of North Ipswich, that mapping is worth checking, and it helps to mention any flood history in your enquiry. View Council flood mapping ↗

What to send us

Photographs taken safely during rain are the single most useful thing you can send us, because the water shows us what a dry inspection cannot. Note whether the problem is new, which areas it affects and whether any landscaping, paving or building work happened before it started. Do not enter floodwater or open a pit.

What actually moves the price

Accessibility, pipe length, the blockage itself, any damage and whether drainage needs redesigning all affect the scope. Where a surface problem and an underground one are connected, we assess them together, because fixing one and leaving the other is how people end up paying twice.

WORTH KNOWING

Straight answers.
Awkward ones too.

Is stormwater the same as sewer drainage?

No, and they are separate systems. Stormwater carries rainwater; sanitary drainage carries wastewater from your fixtures. Establishing which system is affected is the first step, and it changes everything that follows.

Why does it cope in light rain but overflow in a storm?

That pattern usually means a partial blockage or not enough capacity. The pipe handles a trickle and cannot handle volume. A camera will show which of the two you are dealing with.

Will clearing the leaves fix it?

Sometimes, if surface debris is genuinely the cause. But if the water still pools once the grates are clear, the problem is underground or in the design, and that is worth investigating before the next wet season.
